RAVISHANKAR SUITE

In 1966, George Harrison checked into The Taj Mahal Palace Hotel under an assumed name and studied sitar under Pandit Ravi Shankar. and it was to commemorate this legendary occasion that the Ravi Shankar Suite was created. The suite occupies a prime location at the centre of the Taj s sea-facing elevation, an exalted location being part of its very inception. Adorned with original artifacts and memorabilia from the Ravi Shankar foundation and artworks of painters like Jamini Roy, Raja Ravi Verma and Raza, every facet pays homage to the legendary composer. A whimsically luxuriant atmosphere pervades every space making it a retreat extraordinaire. There is a sense of musical harmony in the way every element of the suite comes together as one iconoclastic and eccentrically hospitable paradise. There is even a dedicated library with a collection of concert recordings of Pandit Ravi Shankar and George Harrison. In fact, from the colours of the sitar that are used as the main colour theme throughout, to memorabilia and sitars that the genius once played, this suite is an inspiration, much like the man himself.

RAJPUT SUITE

As it opens its golden gates to you, spread across over 1800 square feet, there is a sense of stunning space that embraces you in the Rajput Suite. Indeed it is steeped in old Rajasthani opulence, even while exuding the aura of modern day technology like one-touch lighting, intelligent energy management systems and interactive media content on demand. The palatial marble floor employs traditional chevron design, while the walls are treated with relief arches, reminiscent of the perimeter colonnades of a traditional palace courtyard. The friezes, cornices and ceilings combine niches, corbels and rosettes in deep plaster relief. The furniture and decorative lighting are intended to reflect the typically eclectic collections that successive generations of royalty accumulated at their palaces. The color scheme expresses richness through a palate of strong contrasts - piano-black lacquer and ebony set against pickled white and ivory, with gold filigree painting and zardozi embroidery adding a further layer of richness, both in pattern and color. The suite features painted dados and wall panels in traditional patterns, the centerpiece of which is a majestic peacock at the heart of the main living salon. The bedroom is grand and gracious. In the study, the contrast between the working table and the inviting swing is telling. Balconies dot the entire suite. Each looking tenderly at the sea outside. The Rajput Suite recreates a rich era with renewed refinement.
