There are 22 refreshingly minimal guest rooms and suites, including a penthouse with an open-air hot tub and 360° views of the city. MADE BY ORIGINALS A powerful figure in contemporary art, Greek Cypriot Dakis Joannou has amassed one of the most important collections of postwar and contemporary artists. Joannou began collecting art in the mid-1980s after making his fortune expanding his family’s construction business in the Middle East, North Africa, and southern Europe. Through his DESTE Foundation for Contemporary Arts, Joannou frequently mounts exhibits and gives awards to support emerging artists. ARCHITECTURE & DESIGN Minimalist shapes and contemporary style characterize Periscope Hotel’s experimental design by decaARCHITECTURE. The incredible rooftop views are brought into the building and projected in its public spaces, generating the concept of the hotel itself as an urban surveillance mechanism. Aerial photographs of parts of Athens, by Athenian artist Nikos Daniilides, cover the ceilings of guestrooms and skyline panoramic night shots of the city are placed on the beams of the suites. Throughout the industrial-looking concrete structure, modern works of art blend with interactive, mechanized installations.
