Embodying the spirit of adventurous travel and trendy Nordic design that dwells at ION Adventure Hotel, the 18-room ION City Hotel is the citified version of ION’s original award-winning countryside retreat. Located in the heart of Reykjavik, with access to many shops, cafés, restaurants, and bars, ION City Hotel is housed in a smartly renovated building, with external walls featuring a motif inspired by traditional Icelandic weaving. Inside, guests discover luxuriously organic interiors defined by clean lines, Icelandic art, and a palette of gray and white, contrasted by warm-hued wooden floors. A stay at ION City Hotel also includes farm-fresh cuisine, a go-to bar for locals, a gym, and a private dining room.
MADE BY ORIGINALS
Sigurlaug Sverrisdottir is a traveler, explorer, and entrepreneur—ideal traits for an adventurous hotelier with a strong presence in both the Icelandic capital and in its cherished hinterlands. In 2013, she created ION Adventure Hotel in the rural town of Selfoss, then in 2017 created ION City Hotel in the center of Reykjavik. Along with her husband Halldor Hafsteinsson, who was the CFO of an Icelandic airline, Sverrisdottir boldly expresses her knowledge and experience through both properties’ luxury-meets-adventure concept.
ARCHITECTURE & DESIGN
Reflecting a number of Icelandic themes through design, the hotel features such elements as a real birch tree in the reception area and a “bird’s nest” light fixture, both paying homage to the countryside that Icelanders hold in such high esteem. Interior architecture highlights include wood-paneled walls, high-end furniture, and window seats overlooking Reykjavik.
